G0704 Electronics

This page will cover several electronics packages that will work for the G0704.
I'll start with the components that I plan to use and add some more that can or are being used sucessfully by others

Hoss CNC package - This runs at 50 Volts and 5 Amps

(3) KL-6050 Bipolar Stepper Motor Drivers  $49.95  /  $149.85
(3) KL23H2100-50-4B (3/8” Dual shaft with a flat) 570 oz-in  $54.95  /  $164.85
(1) KL-600-48 48V/12.5A Power Supply $129.95 or Kl-4813 48V/13A Unregulated - $139
(1) C10 Bidirectional Breakout Board $28.04

Option A Total = $472.69 to $481.74

Note: I've done many tests running all 3 Axis' off of this power supply from Keling.
KL-350-48 48V/7.3A
110V/230V  $49.95
It has proven to work quite well even at full speed so it can be considered a viable option
to use instead of the 12.5 Amp supply listed above. Watch the Video here.
The Gecko rule for power supply selection is total motor amperage times .6.
For (3) 5 amp 570's the power supply amperage would be 15 x .6 = 9 amps.
I'd still go with the 12.5A if you plan on adding a 4th and 5th axis.

Option B Total = $392.69

A good middle of the ground switching power supply would be this.
KL-480-48 48V/10A $99.95

Option C Total = $442.69

Keling has new Digital drivers that offer many new features like Motor auto-identification,
Mid range Anti-Resonance and idle current reduction.
Use (3) KL-5056D instead of the (3) KL-6050's.

Option D Total = Add $150 to the cost of the other Options.

Note - Alternate Sources:
Keling may have a shortage on the KL-6050's and 570 oz/in motors from time to time,
I've shown these to be a superior combination, fantastic performance at a great price.
They've become very popular.
Similar 60 Volt 5 Amp drivers and 570 oz/in motors can be found from the following vendors.

DMM Tech AC Servos

These AC servos are becoming popular for their good power and ease of setup.
They have several packages and individual components.
300 watts should provide a decent minimum for speeds and power with 3:1 pulley ratios
and are nema 23 so will fit the motor mounts.* see below.
I personally would go for the 400 watt package although these motors are slightly larger
than nema 23 and would need slightly larger bores and bolt patterns as shown here.
Use pulley ratio of 2-3:1 for the X and Y axis and 3-4:1 for the Z axis.
Packages listed here.
http://www.dmm-tech.com/Files/DMMTechnology_multiaxiscatalogue_Rev.1.1.pdf

Total = $1130 - $1160

* Note: Servos will require belt reduction drives for each axis 2:1 to 4:1 ratio. These can be adapted from the Phase 1 and 2 plans for the Y and Z axis but you will have to create your own for the X axis. Check out sdubfids thread for inspiration.

Keling Motor Comparison Chart

This chart shows Stepper Motors available from Automationtechnologiesinc by their oz/in size, part number, Amps/phase and max Voltage based on the geckodrive calculation "square root of the motors inductance multiplied by 32". This can make it easier when choosing a motor to make sure it is within the specs of the driver and power supply of your choice. To get the most out of your motor, you want the driver to be able to provide the amperage needed by the motor and the power supply to be as close to the motors voltage without going over. Example, a 906 oz/in 6.1 Amp motor run on a 3.5 Amp driver will only output 520 oz/in. A 50.6 volt motor will run very well on a 48 volt power supply but would overheat on a 72 volt power supply.
Note: 8 wire motors are rated as wired in the preferred Bipolar parallel mode.

USB for Laptops

If you want to use a modern day laptop to run your mill using Mach 3 you will need an external motion controller because Mach 3 uses the parallel port to connect to the breakout boards. Most modern day laptops if not all no longer have parallel ports. Generic parallel port adapters won't work. Compatible external controllers can be found on the Mach 3 Plugins page. The most popular is the Smoothstepper from Warp9, many use it with desktops as well. Though they have the original usb version the ethernet version is apparently better. You can get one direct from Warp9 or through many resellers like Automation Tech.
USB Smoothstepper $155
Ethernet Smoothstepper $189
USB Smoothstepper with Terminals for Mach 3 $199.98
Ethernet Smoothstepper with Terminals for Mach 3 $219.95
